Im trying to learning to play the guitar and I am so frustrated! Help, please?

I got a wonderful acoustic guitar for Christmas. I can’t tune it to save my life. I have been using an online tuner and when I attempt to play a chord it just doesn’t sound right. The guitar is an acoustic/electric with some kind of fancy tuner built into the side of the guitar, and I cant seem to figure it out.
Additionally, fingering for chords just seems IMPOSSIBLE. Am I doing something wrong? I cant seem to contort my fingers the way I think I am suppose to. Might I add, I have freakishly long fingers..I played the piano and oboe for 8 years. I love music but the guitar is SO different.
I am getting irritated and want to give up. Any advice?

Well, i’d get a chromatic tuner. Korg makes a great chromatic tuner, it has a built in speaker so you just hit the string and tune it to the desired note for acoustic, plug it in for electric and do the same.

Starting from the 6th (thick string) string, you’re notes are E A D G B E…you can think of it as….Even After Dinner Giant Boys Eat. Its important that you know that.

Tuning by ear is cool, but why the hassle? A tuner is a tool, and to get any job done correctly, you gotta use the right tools.

Okay, a chromatic tuner is a lifesaver especially when you get into using alternative tunings.

Fingering chords are a stretch for anybody, long or short fingers. It takes practice and patience. Keep your wrist loose in your fretting hand and relax. With pratice and time, it’ll get easier.

I know the frustration. When I first started playing, I stood up and slammed my guitar on the floor. I have a bad temper. I picked it up, tried to do it again and this time got mad and punched the guitar.

But now, I can change chords with great speed.

also, remember that tone is mostly in the players hands. So, make sure you’re not flubbing notes with other fingers, make sure every note in the chord is getting played cleanly. Hold the chord, pluck each individual string, and then strum when each note is ringing clearly.

Make sure you’re not hitting notes that don’t belong in the chord. The G and E chords are big chords where you hit every string. The C chord, on the other hand, is a chord where you don’t hit the 6th string. The D chord, you only hit the 4th,3, 2, 1 strings.

Even once you get good, you may not sound like the person sitting next to you or playing on the tv. Their tone is coming from their hands and their equipment. So I can pick up Jimi Hendrix’s guitar and I won’t suond like him, Hendrix can pick up my guitar and he won’t sound like me.
